The Crossroads, Pontoise (Le Carrefour, Pontoise), 1872 by Camille Pissarro

Information about painting

This painting represents the crossroads near an entrance to the old town of Pontoise, where Pissarro settled after 1871. The grassy expanse in the foreground served then (and still does) as an open-air market. Pissarro had an extraordinary capacity to create poetry from ordinary scenes like this one. Later in his life he wrote, “One can make such beautiful things with so little. Motifs that are too beautiful wind up by appearing theatrical...Happy are those who can see beauty in modest spots where others see nothing.”
